Peter Wilson Dream Theater The Dream Master eBook John Archer
Vikings, dragons, zombies, a magical sword: it’s easy to see why YA audiences will love John C. Archer’s debut novel, PETER WILSON’S DREAM THEATER: THE DREAM MASTER.The book tells the story of 15-year-old Peter Wilson, the Hermione Grainger of Walter Brooks’ literature class at Clovis High. After reading Beowulf, Peter dreams about Vikings. It’s “a really good dream,” Peter decides, but that’s all —until he happens across the Dream Trekker X-5000 in shop in Chinatown. The Dream Trekker, a set of high-tech goggles from a secret government project that Brooks developed in the 1980s, allows Peter to enter the dream world as an active participant.
Peter’s adventure unfolds like a dream, in disjointed sequences. “Real life” intrudes at odd intervals, sometimes making no sense-- like when Peter’s cat shows up with an un-catlike ability to speak English—but that’s just the way dreams work.
Despite Brooks’ early warning that people died during the original government experiments, it seems that Peter is completely safe in his imaginary world. Even dragon fire cannot hurt him. However, the boy may not be in complete control. Although it seems at first that events are inspired by Peter’s reading, he discovers that his adventure mirrors a bit of history that he knows nothing about.
Clearly, this is a story that is tailor-made for young teens, with its whispers of magic, technology, time travel, and even romance. However, the narration is often wordier and more formal than in the typical YA book. For example, this is how Peter gets ready to dream:
“To Peter, one of the attractions of lucid dreaming was the potential for adventure and fantasy fulfillment. This prompted him to learn more about lucid dreaming even beyond the book he was reading, so he also spent hours searching the Internet. After accumulating an extensive body of knowledge on the subject, he began to envision the possibilities. The potential to navigate and participate in his imaginary dream world influenced him the most.”
There are a few grammar mistakes and misused words spread throughout the story, like when Peter hopes a bully “gets his just deserts” and when he finds a “prostrate figure” who most certainly is lying on her back. Despite these, it is apparent that the author knows his stuff. The amount of detail he uses in his descriptions of Viking culture and lucid dreaming show that he has done much research.
According to hints dropped in the final chapter, the next book in the series will feature pirates. Readers will hope to see many more books after that.

Peter Wilson Dream Theater The Dream Master eBook John Archer Reviews
A highly imaginative and entertaining read. An ingenious weave of science-fiction, fantasy, and historical Vikings. Most of the story takes place in a dream setting, from the viewpoint of the protagonist Peter Wilson. Can’t wait for the next book in the series!
I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review. Peter Wilson's Dream Theater is a great adventure story for young teens. The book follows high school freshman Peter Wilson as he learns to control his dreams through lucid dreaming and go on adventures in a Walter Mitty type way. In this first of the books (I think more are planned) he travels in his dream theater as a Viking to rescue a kidnapped princess.
The book is well written and though I thought it too young for most adults, it should be an enjoyable read for teens.
