Dark Ink Embrace The Shoalman Chronicles Book 3 edition by Toni Decker Sharon Carpenter Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
When I first started this series I was confused about what was taking place. And while I may not still understand the why they are needing guardians, and why they are so special and where they originated from. Every book I read seems to add more layers to the puzzle. I am adoring the characters and the challenges they go through to find each other and to rescue themselves and those they love.
In this third book of the Shoalman Chronicles Carmen Solvak is a lawyer who is trying to make her way outside of the "family business" She is young and trying to make a name for herself in the lawyer world. She has her challenges there, a senior partner who finds sexual harrassment a game. And a case load that rivals the Eifel Tower in size by the number of files.
At the wake for her Grandmother Carmen runs outside to get some air and runs into the broad solid chest of Victor. The connection between them is INSTANT and unmistakeable. Victor runs off and Carmen wanted to follow yet was too drunk to do so. After a chance run in at the Deli, Carmen gets more information and learns that she is a guardian to not one but TWO people, of all the challenges. Victor and his sister Tori are on the run from their Uncle Emil.
This book merges all the characters from the first two books into this one. I am left wanting more and it is with great anticipation that I await book four. I want to find out how they get Emil, What happens between Rori and Jay, and what about Mik? Will Mik find his love?
This book also makes me want a new tattoo. HAHA .. yeah seriously. I love getting ink and seeing ink on others. Yeah I am in serious desire of new Ink.
Highly recommended. This could be a stand alone as you wont be totally lost in what is going on, yet I find it helps know the characters if you read from book one to now. Besides if you read this one first, you're just going to want the others anyway.
The third part to the fabulous Shoalman Chronicles centers on the story between Rori, Victor and Carmen while, as per the second story, continuing to incorporate and insert the characters from the previous books, weaving a unique tale of magic, friendship and loyalty.
Carmen has worked hard to become the legal shining star of the family. Armed with the biggest case of her firm’s existence and the determination to become the glue that holds the Solvack family together, Carmen is ready to take on any challenge that comes her way. In full belief that she was never meant to carry on the family legacy of guardianship, she receives a rude awakening when a she finds herself flung into the arms of a mysterious stranger in the darkened alleyway of her family’s establishment.
Victor and Aurora have been on the run from their uncle Emil since the death of their father. Victor knows that he is closing in fast and that Baltimore may not have been the smartest choice to settle. Just a few more seedy underground inking sessions and they will have enough money to get out of town and away from danger, until he meets Carmen and the choice of leaving becomes something he can no longer control.
I can definitely say that this book was a lot stronger than the previous book and allowed me to get immersed within the events happening between the three main characters. The authors did a really great job at bringing the focus in during the course of this book which allowed for them to provide the readers with more detail about why the ink was important and how Emil came to be so evil. I loved that the group of friends continued to solidify and support each other and that there was room left over for them to continue the story with the same characters.
My only real criticisms center on the fact that we still don’t know anything about the Romani culture and how guardianship came to be. The authors also use the word enveloped in just about every chapter. It is definitely time to find a different word or a different way to write out that feeling. And lastly, the romantic trope has been used the same way in each of the three books. I understand that the connections between this group of characters works the same way due to the magic they possess, but I really think the limits could be pushed out some and could create a powerful connection through other means.
Despite the few lingering plot holes, I can see the progression in thought processes and can appreciate the slow build of the overall world. I love that this book centered on the ink. The dynamics on how it all works was complete and had a unique spin on what might have been hinted at in the first two books. I’m very much looking forward to see how book four can propel the story even further.
Victor's story is a fabulous read! While it isn't necessary to have read the others in the series, it would be helpful to know what is going on more and understand it all better. I loved how bumping into Victor caused such a reaction. I also was interested in how the ink was drawing him in. I miss Mama T...she sounds like she would've been awesome. Carmen doesn't realize she is a Guardian. She figures it must've somehow skipped her, even though she comes from a long line of them. I liked Victor's sister, Aurora (I'm using her formal name because at first I thought she was another character, duh!). They were so protective of one and other. Christophe made me want to scream for most of the book. I loved Mik. I was also so glad Lucien and Robert played a part in the book. I was so afraid they wouldn't. I can't express much of the story, as I keep re-typing or deleting most of my comments due to possible spoilers. Suffice it to say, this will explain SOOOOOO much when you make it to the end. So many confusions and questions are solved and many aha moments will be had. I was thrilled with the book!
Voluntary review of ARC.
