Do not look to find in this volume a history of occultism, or a methodical monograph on the subject. To such a work one would need to devote whole volumes, which would of necessity be filled with a great measure of that very rubbish which I wish above all to spare the reader. I have no other aim than to tell as simply as possible what I have learned in the course of some years that were spent in these rather discredited and unfrequented regions.
I bring thence the impressions of a candid traveler who has traversed them rather as one seeking to observe than as a believer. These pages contain, if you will, a kind of summary, a provisional stock-taking. I know nothing that may not be learned by the first comer who will travel the same road.

This book should never have been offered for Kindle until it was formatted properly!. It contains great concepts. There is no problem there. But it's nearly impossible to read as page headers and chapter numbers have been left to insert themselves indiscriminately in the middle of the text thus necessitating the skills of a transcriber to glean what the text is actually saying. I'm surprised Amazon accepted it in its current condition. I have returned the book.Product details

This book and author were mentioned numerous times by Henry Miller in his writings. As a Henry Miller devotee, I try to seek out and read the books of his life. Some of them even become books of my life. I found The Great Secret to be a pretty interesting book. I have an ongoing interest in human spirituality and religion. There is a great deal of information in this book which must have been startling in 1922 but has less impact in 1999. It did provide me with some data on the earliest origin of the Hindu faith as well as facts on Egyptian mythology and others. I can not really say I buy it all hook, line and sinker but books of this nature do stimulate a lot of serious thought. It is easy to see why the cosmogonical eye of Henry Miller was so impressed. It did rouse a lot of philosophical musing in my mind as I waded through each chapter.
"The Great Secret, the only secret, is that all things are secret." Maurice Maeterlinck was an intellectual mystic, by which I mean he understood metaphysical concepts, and had no mystical experiences to base his writing on. Therefore his book is a work of reason rather than intuitive comprehension or revelation as is made plain by his praise for the Vedas as the height of philosophical speculation, a form of absolute agnosticism. For Maeterlinck, an initiate would be someone with the capacity to understand and appreciate a secret doctrine rather than someone familiar with the unknown dimensions of the mind and soul. For example, regarding visions, Maeterlinck is concerned that they contain no unconscious reminiscences of what has been read, "Most of the great mystics have had visions or intuitions of this kind spontaneously; but they do not possess any real interest unless it can be proven that they are experienced by mystics who are truly and absolutely illiterate." He must imagine that a vision is a metaphysical insight such as could be gleamed from a book on philosophy rather than an ineffable glimpse of the impersonal self's perspective. His mysticism is intellectual rather than experiential.
Maeterlinck seems most impressed by the realization that the cause of causes is unknowable. The secret doctrine whose revelation sealed forever the lips of the great initiates, the dread cry of occultist tradition, "Osiris is a dark god!" However there is some hint that he explored the unconscious in another book, "This subconscious self, this unfamiliar personality, which I have elsewhere called the Unknown Guest, which lives and acts on its own initiative, apart from the conscious life of the brain..".
The book does quote a metaphysical translation of Genesis by Fabre d'Olivet which is supposedly more accurate and impressive than the superficial and restricted version found in the Bible. He also describes some experiments concerning "odic emanations" which is some forgotten term for emanations or effluvia. However, the book appears most horribly dated concerning Tibetan Buddhism which is described ridiculously, "The convents and sanctuaries were explored; but nothing was found save the relics of the noblest religion ever known to mankind [Vedic doctrine], finally rotting and dwindling into puerile superstitions, mechanical prayer-wheels, and the most deplorable witchcraft."
This author is an easy read. His knowlege, insight and writting style gives a clear picture in a somewhat poetic manner. His biograghy is an interesting read.
Help to clear up questions on quantum physics in away that is easy to understand
The Belgian poet, dramatist, and essayist Count Maurice Maeterlinck was an extraordinarily interesting person, who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1911. Sometimes called the "Belgian Shakespeare," he was a member of a group of scientific and literary figures who were preoccupied with man's inner life and spiritual mystery.
This book, first published in French in 1921, has been a staple of spiritual seekers ever since. The author spent years exploring the world's hidden mysteries before stumbling upon a startling insight. This spiritual insight is revealed quite early on in the book. What then follows is a complete history of what arose from that foundation and how the Secret was carried to other ancient cultures around the world and has been held by a select few into modern times. ?
For some time it was quite difficult to obtain copies of the book in English, and I know of at least one major spiritual teacher who therefore suggested to his English students that it would do them good to read it in French!
People often mistake the metaphors of quantum mechanics with the reality. Really grasping quantum mechanics entails seismic perceptual and conceptual shifts of which few people are yet capable. Similarly with the Secret it is not difficult to read, but it cannot be grasped in any simple way it needs an inner shift to "get it."
And as this book shows, even one of the great writers of the twentieth century, who know this material extremely well, was still limited in how much he could communicate with the written word. Part of the Great Secret is also a great paradox that there must be a Mystery, and that there is a world to explore that can only be found beyond words or concepts, in the realm of the spiritual intuition and guidance.
Though the book cannot spell out the Secret, it can still - and does - point us in the right direction. And it does so with brilliance and mastery.
This is a wonderful book to read, for it takes you to the brink of what can be known with words. And if you have reached a certain point in your own development, this might be just the helping hand that you need to take another step on your Path.
