I believe The Shadow and the Star is the kind of romance you will either find thrilling or you will roll your eyes at it. For me, although parts were a little uneven, as a whole I bought into the story, and it worked for me. Samuel was such a complex character: sexually abused as a child, ashamed and proud, lonely, living in fear of ever disappointing his foster family, yet also strong, disciplined, and smart. He encounters perfectly proper, genteely impoverished dressmaker Leda, and circumstances (fate?)keep throwing them together. Unusual for a romance, the H is as sexually inexperienced as the h. He thinks he wants to marry his feminine ideal Catherine and has worked his whole life trying to be worthy of her, even though he can't imagine having marital relations with her because he feels his love for her is pure. We readers know that it will be Leda who will be the one to stir his desires, but will he give her his heart as well?

The Shadow and the Star Laura Kinsale 9780380761319 Books Reviews

I am actually surprised this book gets such high ratings. I never really connected to it in any meaningful way and that was a long read to get through under those circumstances. My major complaint is the extreme lack of communication between all the characters. Nobody knew what was going on with anyone else in the story. Their back stories are told in a very dispassionate way, so we sort of get to know about them but not in an emotional way. I felt no emotional connection to the characters, it seemed that they had little or no connection to each other as well. Samuel was like a cardboard cutout of a person, going through the motions of his life. Leda barely breaks away from the convention of society enough to be believable in her feelings. The bones of the story were good....it is a shame the characters never really came to life and were so awkward and unfeeling. I am sorry to say I found this novel long and disappointing.
I still just LOVE this historical romance. I first read this quite a while ago when it first came out. Laura Kinsale is a terrific writer of flawed heroes who steal your heart. Here, he's a ninja-businessman with deep and awful scars from his past, and yet he manages to retain a touching, appealing vulnerable innocence. The heroine is good of heart, also innocent, and she will change his life, even as he changes her. They have a lot of obstacles, but as in any good romance, love finds a way. This story takes you from England to Hawaii, and it's structure moves from story-present to hero-past, so that we see the events, mentors, goals that forge the man he is--dangerous yet kind, wounded yet seeking healing.

It's a simply marvelous Victorian era romance. I've reread it many times. I had the paperback and bought the ebook this time. I will read it again. Thank you, Ms Kinsale, for writing this delightful keeper.
I LOVED this book.

Laura Kinsale writes like an angel. I have read most of her books; although I regret that I did not read "The Hidden Heart" first, which would have answered some of the questions that I had about how Samuel became linked with the Ashland family.

I will not go into plot details, as this has been done by all the other reviewers most thoroughly. I did feel that the interaction between Samuel and Leda could have been expanded in lieu of some of the plot line dedicated to his relationship with the Dojun.

I do believe that L K deliberately leaves out some of the plot points; she wants readers to draw their own conclusions. Some authors are like that and you either go with it, as I do, or you become frustrated.

She is my favorite author. No author is perfect but she comes as close as any romance author I have read. I only wish that she had written more books.
Flowers In The Storm is probably in the top ten favourite historical romance of all time for most historical readers. The Shadow in the Star is a lot less known and less reviewed, but I think I loved it more. Probably because of the crazy sauce factor, it was so exciting and enjoyable. And a refreshing change from the usual Duke and ladies of the ton.

One has to remember, this was written approx 30 years ago, and is filled with "crazy sauce" and perhaps a turn of phrase that may have raised my eyebrow more than once. We travel back and forth between Samuel's current and past, who shaped him into the Japanese speaking Hawaiian self-made man he is now. I loved the Japanese employee who took him in as his ninja-like prodigy as a damaged boy. I loved the history of Japanese slaves shipped to Hawaii by the wealthy American land owners, these slaves settling and making homes. I loved the British aristocratic family who took in Samuel and raised him as one of their own. I loved the adventure from Regency London to Hawaii.

This is long slow burn. And a heroine who is in love with a hero who is in love with (or thinks) someone else - lots of forlorn pining catnip. And, male virgin catnip. When our characters finally have encounters, sexiest thing ever! This is a relationship you are rooting for, desperate for, through all their challenges, such is the deft build from this author of laying out our characters bare. Beautiful characterisation. And secondary and mentor characters to love.

I bounced from listening to the audible and reading the ebook. The incomparable Nicolas Boulten does an amazing job of setting out the scene and building the characters to life. I recommend the amazing narration to get you over the huge world-building parts earlier in the book. And just because, his voice... (sigh!!)

Excellent, a forever favourite and "Desert Island Keeper"
