Blood Feud The Drake Chronicles Alyxandra Harvey Books

Blood Feud, the second entry in Alyxandra Harvey's Drake Chronicles, shows some marked differences from Hearts at Stake. Whereas that first book was primarily a frothy, if eminently enjoyable paranormal teen romance (although it does also provide a solid introduction to the very interesting vampire world Harvey has created) Blood Feud is darker, more mature and even more engrossing.

Blood Feud picks up almost immediately after the point where Hearts at Stake ends, with the seven Drake brothers and their sister Solange adjusting to the notion of their mother as the new vampire queen. Hoping to create a new kind of vampire court, Queen Helena and King Liam are attempting to form alliances with both the reclusive Hounds and the Helios-Ra vampire hunters against Montmartre's Host and the feral Hel-Blar.

18-year-old Logan, the Drake's second youngest son, is tasked with hosting the Hound envoy, Isabeau St. Croix. Like most whose fealty lies with the royal court, Logan knows little about the vampires known as Hounds and most of what he does know turns out to be wholly false, greatly exaggerated or woefully out-of-date. He is immediately drawn to Isabeau and finds that he wants to know everything about the fierce, proud Hound princess.

Isabeau, as it turns out, is almost as ignorant about the Drakes and their court as Logan is about the Hounds. From the minute she arrives at the court with her two fellow envoys, she is kept off-balance by the Drakes' informal lifestyle and their seeming willingness to form a connection with the Hounds. Isabeau, however, is not so sure the wisdom of such an alliance. Both her life and her undeath have taught her that trusting others most often leads to betrayal.

The developing romance between Logan and Isabeau is just one of the plot lines in Blood Feud and, as much as I enjoyed their story, I found myself just as interested in the description of the machinations inherent in vampire politics, the exploration of the Hounds way of life, and the nefarious plotting of Montmartre and his lieutenant Greyhaven, who just happens to be the vampire who ended Isabeau's human life. Flashbacks to Isabeau's struggles to survive the horrors of the French Revolution add depth to her character and to the story as a whole.

If you found Hearts at Stake a little light for your taste, you're sure to be more satisfied with Blood Feud. If (like me) you count Hearts at Stake among your favorite guilty pleasures and you are eager to learn more about the Drake family and their world, Blood Feud is going to make you very happy.

Blood Feud The Drake Chronicles Alyxandra Harvey Books Reviews

I did not like this second book. I thought it was going to be funny as the first one. No having Lucy and Nicholas in the book made a HUGE difference! Logan in the first book was a funny boy. But In this book was nothing like he was in Hearts at Stake.Isabeau was boring. Her POV was so boring. And the few times that Lucy was in the book was excellent. Because this book was long and boring and nothing like book 1 I gave it 2 stars. Now I can't wait to start book#3, I was told it is much better than this book.
The second book in The Drake Chronicles turned out to be a bit of a letdown. I have to admit I purchased and read Hearts at Stake on recommendation from a friend and was instantly hooked. I had really liked the dual perspectives of the two main female characters and welcomed the fluidity of the text. However, I found Blood Feud to be choppier and could not get into the storyline. All in all, I was ready to basically pick up right where i had left off from the first book and was surprised in the switch in perspectives, and the storyline that left much to be desired. I give the book 3 stars because, while I was disappointed, the book was a welcome change from the usual YA vampire plots.
This was another great episode in the Drake Chronicles. Logan is the fashion-conscious brother but that doesn't mean he isn't also a great warrior. He just looks really good when he fights. He is a young vampire and thoroughly modern. Isabeau is the daughter of a French duke and she survived the French Revolution. But then she was turned into a vampire and buried for 200 years. She became a part of the Hounds (Cwn Mamau) who raise and train fierce dogs and who haven't forgotten how to use magic.Magic has told her that she will find her mate among the Drakes. Logan is more than OK with that.

But before they can move on to happily ever after, they have to deal with Montmartre who wants to be king and Greyhaven, who turned Isabeau to a vampire and wants to stage a coup and become king himself. Add that to the distrust the different groups of vampires have for each other and it is easy to see that the path will not be smooth.

I liked both main characters. I also like the style of the book with each chapter being narrated by one of the main characters. The flashbacks to the Isabeau's human life also added interest and depth to the story. The dialog between Isabeau and Logan was fun.

The only thing I didn't like about this story was that there wasn't enough of Lucy and Solange.

Recommended for all lovers of vampire stories.
I really enjoyed the first book in this series, Hearts at Stake, and I was looking forward to the sequel. I was a little disappointed when I realized that it's not really about Solange and Lucy, the main characters of the last book. They both make appearances, as do the vampire hunter Keiran, Solange's brother Nicholas, and the rest of the Drake clan, but this time the focus is on Logan, the second youngest Drake brother, and Isabeau, a member of the Hound vampire tribe.

Logan's mother Helena is the new vampire queen, and creepy Montmartre still wants to marry his sister Solange, the vampire princess. The Drakes are trying to make an alliance with the Hound tribe, and Isabeau is representing the Hounds at Helena's coronation. Isabeau wants to kill Greyhaven, the vampire who turned her and is one of Montmartre's followers.

The action is fast and furious, and Logan and Isabeau are soon caught up in various vampire machinations. Logan is astounded by Isabeau and feels very protective of her. Isabeau is a bad-ass who's not used to needing protection, but she still finds herself drawn to Logan.

This book is an entertaining, quick read. My only real complaint is that since it's such a quick read, the romance feels a bit rushed. Despite this, I enjoyed the book, perhaps not quite as much as I enjoyed the first one, but certainly enough to keep reading the series.
